I don't know that I have any great solutions to the problem in general,
but does it make sense to send precisely one person to another room? I
guess we don't want to leave desks unused in the main lab, but it would
make more sense to me to send about 3 people off elsewhere, so there's at
least someone else in the same room to work with.

Also, the "unfair to people not in the lab" factor would go down if we
actually made an announcement about when to be in the lab - say, 24 hours
in advance, and, say, around a time many of us will be gathered for
something. So for instance, 11:30 on Thursday, when many of us will be
returning from HoPL class, if we want to go by a concrete meeting time.

The lottery concept might also work. I don't know what the current
situation is, but if there's anything to resolve I don't see what's being
accomplished by the lack of any official discussion or communication.
