this got me in the right direction. for those who are wondering:

it seems to be maintained for some time now, to quote from bugs.gentoo.org:
"this is a well supported patch, which was written for 3.5p1 and has been 
maintained to the current version, 3.8p1."

there is a gentoo ebuild, can be found under:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59182
