PERSPECTIVES ON THE DIGITAL HUMANITIES
Professor Ryan Cordell, Department of English, St. Norbert’s College
“‘The Pamphlet and Piratical System’: Rediscovering the Networks of
Nineteenth-Century
Print Culture”
THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2012 NOON-1:30 PM
400B HOLMES HALL
The antebellum print market was, for its time, as expansive, unchecked, unruly, and culturally disruptive as the internet is today.
Prof. Cordell will use the rich textual history of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Celestial Railroad” to reveal the networks of printing, reprinting, reference, appropriation, and reauthorship that animated literary and popular print in the United States before the Civil War, highlighting the central role religious editors and readers played in con-structing American mass media. Comparing the print history of “The Celestial Railroad” with the better-known history of Poe’s “The Raven,” Prof. Cordell will explore how geo-spatial tools can help us understand nuances of nineteenth-century print culture previ-ously invisible to scholars.
