[PRL] displaying git branch in emacs mode line

I'd like to set up my emacs so that the current git branch is displayed in
the mode line, as I've seen folks do in several demos.

What is the simplest way to accomplish this?  I don't need a full-featured
front end to git-- I'm quite happy with the command line interface-- but I
do want this so I'll have a reminder that I am working in the right branch.
