ii think you have a few points confused. 

under /net
it's /net/arch-solaris
which is symlinked to /arch on the suns.

we'd have /net/arch-linux
which symlinks to /arch on the new boxes
i'd honestly prefer a standard stow package directory with bin,etc,include,...
and the packages in a stow or package directory.

Xapps, unix, daemons, can all be symlinked to .
which would let paths like /arch/Xapps/bin/aterm (as an example)
work fine.
