[scponly] can't start sftp-server on Fedora Core 5

This is my first post to this list, so if I don't adhere to conventions I
apologize in advance.
Despite the subject line, my first question is on searching the archive, so I
can try to find the answer myself. I didn't see any search function in the
mail list subscription page - did I miss it? I also tried googling site:
https://lists.ccs.neu.edu/pipermail/scponly/
but had no success.

So, my question: I've been running scponly on Fedora Core 4 for quite a while,
and I like it, but, in installing it on my FC5 box over the past couple of
days, I've been frustrated.
I've edited my /etc/shells to include scponlyc
I've compiled from source using ./configure –enable-chrooted-binary –
disable-scp-compat –disable-winscp-compat
I've also tried compiling without the two disable switches
When I try to log in, I get past the password prompt but then stall,
eventually getting a message about a broken pipe
If I try to log in locally, I get a message about /dev/null - no such device
Sorry about the imprecision, I'm typing this from home and the machine is in
my office. If this jogs someones memory, I'd really appreciate your
suggestions. If more detail is needed, I can post followup in a couple of
hours.
