Title:  The Institutional Case for OpenCourseWare

Abstract:
This talk traces the history of open educational efforts in higher
education, from the announcement at MIT of OpenCourseWare in 2000
to subsequent iterations of the concepts, including open educational
resources (OER) and massive open online courses (MOOCs).  Beyond the
threat of disruption of higher education, what is the reality?  How can
universities avoid short-term trends and trace a path of sustainable
benefits to their students, the faculty, and the institution itself,
while contributing to increased access to higher education globally?

Short Biography:
Larry Cooperman is the President of the OpenCourseWare Consortium, whose
300 universities, colleges and organizations work to advance the goal of
universal access to higher education.  Since 2010, he has served on the
board of directors of the African Virtual University.  At the University
of California, Irvine, he directs its award-winning OpenCourseWare
project, including its open curriculum efforts in chemistry and other
STEM subjects.
