Thesis title:
"New Models and Architectures for Flash Storage Systems"
Abstract:
Flash storage has rapidly grown over the last few years into an important competitor to disk drives, due to its lower power consumption, lower latencies and lower cost per IOPs. This thesis explores new ways to efficiently integrate flash storage in today's computer systems. Our work follows a bottom up approach starting with a detailed investigation of flash device characteristics and internal logic, and their impact on higher-level properties such as whole-device endurance and performance. We next explore methods to integrate flash storage in new efficient architectures, and propose Active Flash, an approach that migrates data analysis in high-performance scientific computing to the location of the data, the flash device itself. This reduces the dependence on limited bandwidth to a central storage system, allowing the data analysis to proceed in parallel with the main application, and provides substantial energy savings by using the more power-efficient controller.
