Abstract:
Various efforts have been made to develop mechanisms to enhance trust
on the Internet. These include business plans, privacy enhancing
technologies and security technologies.

I begin by discussing the disciplinary perspectives on trust. I argue
that my formation of trust as security, reliability and privacy
remains valid. I propose three hypotheses about human trust
behaviors that apply to expectations of security and data-sharing
(e.g., privacy) behaviors.

I argue that current computer security mechanisms are designed with
inappropriate assumptions about human behavior. I close by pointing
out how these problems occur in currently installed and proposed
security systems.
