                             ABSTRACT

For the last several years, the Bell Labs Collaboratory research project has
focused on addressing the communication and coordination problems of large,
globally-distributed development projects. The work has included empirical
studies of geographically distributed developments, and, based on our
results, solutions in the form of tools, best practices, and
work-distribution models. We have also used the collaboration technologies
we developed as the basis for Lucent software products. In this talk, I
will describe empirical results showing that distributed development takes
much longer than comparable co-located development, and evidence about why
this appears to occur. I will also describe one of the tools we built and
deployed, i.e., a tool to facilitate the location of people with needed
expertise. Finally, I will describe two services we prototyped as future
products, which take advantage of voice and data convergence to support
distributed teams.
