I've already added '=' as an allowable character and we now have a better structure in place for validation using getopt.  I'll confirm that it works with bwlimit in the near future.

I'm glad to heard that.  I've been hoping to get to one last issue that's preventing me from releasing 4.9.  CVS is stable and contains the following fixes:

* support for rsync 3.0
* fix scponly crash on Solaris
* fix detection and inclusion of getopt on certain platforms
* document risks associated with popt reading /etc/popt and ~/.popt
* document getopt requirement (when certain configure options are enabled)
