Tomorrow in the pl-seminar slot (Wed 1145-145) we will have a PRL
community meeting. This will be a brown-bag lunch meeting.

We will talk about some of the culture of our community and about our
plans and expectations for the year. This will serve as orientation
for our new students.

We'll also plan the pl-seminar schedule for the next month or two.

Hopefully all of the new students have had an opportunity to meet and
interact with each of the returning students, but in order to fill in
the gaps, I'd like each of our students to say a few words about their
background and current work and interests.

Finally, Will Clinger will give an expanded version of the talk he
gave at the Microsoft faculty summit (abstract below).

The order of the agenda items is subject to change :)

Next week, 9/24, President Freeland will give his State of the
University address in the pl-seminar timeslot, so we will not meet.

Regular pl-seminar should start the following week, October 1.

Compiling Weird Languages to Weird Target Architectures
Will Clinger
Northeastern University

Weird languages have weird features that are fun to implement on
standard target architectures. Weird target architectures have
weird misfeatures that are fun to work around. Compiling weird
languages to weird target architectures is fun-squared.

Sun's Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and Microsoft's Common Language
System (CLS) were designed to support languages like Java, and
do not deliver good performance and interoperability for languages
with unusual features such as pure object orientation, integer
arithmetic, or versatile control structures. These problems could
be fixed using known technology.

This is a slightly expanded version of a ten-minute talk that was
presented at the Microsoft Faculty Summit in July 2003.
