I sent this out to the new students this afternoon. I included PRL in the
BCC list but it rejected it so here it is again:

Subject: resources for new students
Hi new students,
(I've BCC'ed everyone to prevent accidental reply-all fiascos, but I've
also appended the list of new students' addresses to the end of this
message.)
We're starting to put together some resources that should hopefully be
helpful for when you get here. Our goal is for you to know what to do
when you get here and not to feel left fending for yourselves. The
first thing you can do, if you have access to a fax machine, is to sign
up now for an account on the UNIX network. Download and print out the
following form:
http://www.ccs.neu.edu/help/account-form.txt
The first step is to log in to the account reservation program via SSH
or the web (the form has all the details). Once you've completed that
process, fill out the form and fax it to +1 617 373 5121 to the
attention of the Systems Group.
You should also sign up to be on the phd-discuss mailing list:
https://lists.ccs.neu.edu/bin/listinfo/phd-discuss
There are other mailing lists for announcements and such, which you
will be automatically signed up for when you get an account, but this
is the list for PhD students to have discussions amongst each other
about activities, events, questions, issues, etc. You can sign up now
with your current email address if you like, or wait until you get an
Northeastern account.
There is also a Wiki web site, still in its larval stage, for CCIS grad
students to share advice with each other:
http://neu.timshel.org/cgi-bin/wiki.cgi
I imagine one of the primary concerns at this point is housing. There's
some info already on the Wiki, and you can also get in touch with each
other via the email addresses listed below or with other students via
the mailing list.
Feel free to reply if you have any questions. Your mentor should also
be a good person to go to with questions, or any of the resources I
listed above.
Cheers,
Dave Herman
