For what it's worth, the xterm man page documents the -display option, 
and also refers to the X man page, which documents the DISPLAY
environment variable.  And of course, the ssh man page documents the
-X option.  But you would probably have had to have read all of these
pages before to even know that there was a command-line argument
solution to the problem (as opposed to, say, having to use xauth).
