Today during the distinguished lecture on blockchain and Byzantine
Failure, the speaker referenced a 1990 paper that inspired the
blockchains:

  How to Time-Stamp a Digital Document
  Stuart Haber & W. Scott Stornetta
  CRYPTO 1990

It's a short paper and does a nice job explaining both the technical
idea, and how it could be used.

I figure people on this list might like reading it too. Let me know if
you want a copy of the paper --- it was too big to attach.
