Hi all,
With all of the new subscribers to this list and many new students, I
thought I'd take this opportunity to start a periodic (hopefully
weekly) update of the state of crew's Linux project. Hopefully this
will let people know what's new & cool in Linux land, and will let us
know much earlier if there is a problem with the project by keeping you
up to date with any changes that take place.

That being said, I'll start this off by giving you an idea of the new or
updated software which has been put into place recently.

xmms, nmap, gimp, and perl have all been updated within the last week to
the latest versions.

We finally have a whois client on Linux, jwhois. This can be invoked by
simply running whois at a command prompt.

Also, XEmacs has been installed, but it does take slightly longer to
load than GNU emacs. If people have any ideas regarding how to alleviate
this, I'm open to suggestions.

GNU Emacs has been moved to a slightly newer version, and has been built
against GTK, which gives a much nicer interface.
