The emacs version difference between emacs on Linux & Solaris is
staggering (21 vs. 19), and version 21 is certainly more polished than
older versions.
The general policy of the new Linux project (which should probably be
documented somewhere) is that core applications which are necessary for
normal UNIX usage (pine, a web browser, emacs, vi, etc.) should be
available and have the same expected behavior as on Solaris. Other
software may not be exactly the same, but there may be much better
alternatives for Linux (e.g. GDM as opposed to XDM for the logon screen,
and anti-aliased fonts). As long as people show interest in it, it will
probably be installed.
That being said, I'd be happy to install XEmacs should you not be happy
with the emacs currently on the Linux boxes.
