In the Avatar Designer Guide there should be a little section for Mac Users
describing all the issues that David found?

External users of SCGCourt will be in a similar position as David.

I think I found my problem.

It's useful to note that it seems you need javacc in your path when you run
the server/avatars
as well as when you generate the templates.
