Talk Title: Designing collaborative health technologies for youth

Abstract:
Social support - help from friends, family, and community - plays a vital role in health and healthcare, particularly for young people. In this talk, I will show how social computing technologies can leverage social support to help youth connect and collaborate in new ways: allowing classmates to encourage each other to get more exercise each day, helping parents advocate for their hospitalized children and stay informed about their care, and empowering teens living with chronic conditions to reach out to each other for advice. In each of these examples, I will show how a human-centered approach to research and design generated new insights, both for the future of care and the design of information technologies.

Bio:
Andrew D Miller, Ph.D., is a National Library of Medicine Postdoctoral Fellow in the University of Washington's Biomedical and Health Informatics Division. Dr. Miller earned both an MS in Human-Computer Interaction and PhD in Human-Centered Computing from Georgia Tech, and a BA in Cognitive Science from Occidental College. At the University of Washington, Dr. Miller studies how information technologies can better support patients and caregivers-both in the inpatient setting and outside the hospital.
