Title: Multi-source and multi-interface mobile video streaming
Speaker: Vasilios A. Siris, Athens University of Economics and Business, Greece
Date: Thursday June 18 at 11:00 am in WVH 366

Abstract:

Video is expected to become more than 70% of the total mobile traffic by 2019. Moreover, current mobile devices have multiple interfaces with different characteristics, which include 3G/4G and Wi-Fi, and multiple connectivity options, such as Wi-Fi hotspot and device-to-device communication. In this talk I will give an overview of our work on multi-source and multi-interface mobile video streaming. First, by exploiting mobility and throughput prediction, we can perform proactive caching to improve performance in terms of video QoE (Quality of Experience), lower energy consumption, and lower cost. Moreover, mobility-based proactive caching can be combined with popularity-based proactive caching to jointly exploit mobility prediction, which is part of a mobile user’s context, together with content popularity. Finally, I present our results for efficient multipath video transfer over multirate Wi-Fi links, which can include Wi-Fi hotspot and Wi-Fi direct links. Analytical modeling together with experimental results show that the optimal utilization of multirate Wi-Fi links depends on their transmission rates, along with the Wi-Fi hotspot backhaul or cellular throughput.

Short bio:

Vasilios A. Siris obtained the Diploma in Physics (1990) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the M.S. in Computer Science (1992) from Northeastern University, Boston, USA, and the Ph.D. in Computer Science (1998) from the University of Crete. He is an Associate Professor and Director of the Computer and Communication Systems Division at the Department of Informatics of the Athens University of Economics and Business. From November 2002 until January 2009 he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete and a Research Associate at the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH). In the Spring of 2001 he was a Visiting Researcher at the Statistical Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, and during the Summer of 2001 and 2006 he was a Visiting Researcher at the research laboratories of British Telecommunications (BT), both in the UK. His current research interests include resource and traffic management in integrated wireless, mobile, and wired networks and future Information-Centric Networking architectures. A key direction in his research is the combination of analytical methods and techniques, with the prototype implementation and evaluation of these methods in actual systems. In addition to over 100 publications in international peer reviewed journals and conferences, he has one international and two Greek patents the area of resource management in wireless and mobile networks. He is a Technical Program Committee member of many international conferences, and is active in the organization of conferences, including the 7th ΙΕΕΕ PERCOM Workshop on Information Quality and Quality of Service for Pervasive Computing (IQ2S 2015, Program Committee Co-Chair), the International Workshop on Quality, Reliability, and Security in Information-Centric Networking (Q-ICN 2014, Program Committee Chair), and some years ago the 10th IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks - WoWMoM 2009 (General Co-Chair). He is/was the Principal Investigator and Coordinator for many research and development projects funded by the European Commission, the Greek government, and the industry.
