Paper title:
"Tree-Based Document Representation for Passage-Based Retrieval"

Abstract:
"Passage-based document retrieval has shown mixed results when it is
applied to a variety of test beds. One important reason for this
inconsistent performance is the lack of a general framework for
extraction of pieces of information at all levels of granularity. I
present utility of a simple tree-based method for organizing information in
document that aims to extract coherent, complete, and concise pieces
of information from a document at many levels of
granularity. Documents are scored based on their best matching pieces
of information. An extensive set of experiments has been performed on
four different TREC collections to show the effectiveness of simple
tree-based method for document retrieval. I have compared
tree-based method to both standard passage retrieval and
state-of-the-art passage retrieval models. Empirical results show that
the performance of tree-based method exceeds the performance of baseline
passage-based retrieval methods and it equals or exceeds the
performance of much more complicated state-of-the-art passage models."
