ABSTRACT
Within the modern industrialized nations, more people receive the
benefits of healthcare through prescription and non-prescription
pharmaceuticals than any other means. Yet despite the historic
scientific achievement associated with the deciphering of the human
genome, such accomplishments have not translated to increased drug
development productivity. One reason is that the application of the
computational sciences to biotechnology and biomedicine has lagged
behind the tremendous strides made by scientists in understanding the
molecular basis of living organisms. We will discuss examples of
computational problems that require serious attention in the context of
biotechnology and biomedicine, focusing on such problems as molecular
simulations, high performance computing, and data mining.
